Must-See Highlights at the Louvre
The Louvre holds over 35,000 works across eight departments spanning 9,000 years of history. These are the pieces most visitors come to see first.
- The Mona Lisa: Leonardo da Vinci's iconic portrait, displayed behind protective glass in the Salle des États — the museum's single most-visited work.
- Venus de Milo: The armless marble goddess of ancient Greece, one of the most celebrated sculptures ever recovered.
- Winged Victory of Samothrace: A dramatic Hellenistic sculpture perched at the top of the Daru staircase, celebrating a naval triumph.
- The Glass Pyramid: I. M. Pei's 1989 glass-and-steel pyramid over the Cour Napoléon, now as iconic as the palace itself.
About the Louvre
Originally a 12th-century fortress and later a royal palace, the Louvre became a public museum in 1793. Today it is the world's largest and most-visited art museum, housing masterpieces from ancient civilizations through the mid-19th century across the Sully, Denon, and Richelieu wings.
Because of the museum's sheer size, most first-time visitors plan a route in advance — trying to see everything in one visit is not realistic. A skip-the-line ticket or guided tour is the easiest way to make sure your time inside is spent looking at art rather than waiting outside the pyramid.
